Astrobird

Astrobird
One day I had a little idea of a bird who wants to migrate to space. I thought that it’ll take a couple of hours to draw and decided to do it. Well, it took one day to draw it in Illustrator and four days to paint in Photoshop. And it’s not even ready yet (a bit sketchy in many parts, some elements should be better, etc.) but I had to stop somewhere. I’m anyway quite happy with the result and I got good practice in painting in Photoshop.

Father-Daughter relationship

Posted by Janne on Oct 28 2009 | New works 2009

Father-Daughter
This one’s an editorial illustration for a story about bad relationships between fathers and daughters. Girl is trying to get her father to skate with her, maybe because she knows he is interested in ice sports, but father is only interested in ice hockey news and is angry to the girl for interupting him, maybe wishing he had a boy with who he could play.

I think I found a good combination of retro and modern style in this picture. I have been trying to soften my style lately, get rid of sharp edges of colored areas by softening them by blurring. By having both sharp and blurry edges I’m trying also to get more feeling of space and movement.

Noora and the Smiling Stars

I just finished doing illustrations, cover design and layout for a book called Noora ja nauravat tähdet (Noora and the smiling stars) by Finnish author Tittamari Marttinen.

It’s a very nice book for young girls. Noora is a little girl who’s mother, the janitor of their house, falls from a tree while picking up apples, breaks her leg and has to stay in hospital for some time. Noora takes care of the house with her friends, finds an old film star, dreams about a dog and finally gets one (named Kuura).

I’m very happy with my works for the book. I’m specially pleased with the cover: I took my normal style a bit further by softening a backround (and parts of the foreground too) trying to make it look a little bit like a painting.

Hopefully Noora will have a whole series of books.

Pernod ad

expPernod-tausta

Four illustrators of my agency were asked to do illustrations for in-bar-ad-campaign of Pernod. They gave us quite free hands, within certain brand-concerning rules of course.

I did this piece about captain of a shipwreck floating towards a fire-erupting iceberg. The flying fish show hin the way and big wave is helping him to get there. I tried to give impression of refreshment, adventure, fairytale and a little danger.
